The USTA Tennis Parent Guide is the best place to start. It walks you through the fundamentals of teaching tennis to a beginner, including drills, equipment basics, and how to keep early lessons fun and engaging.

Experience: You have some experience teaching part-time and are ready to take the next step.
Pursuing PTR Coaching Certification is the standard path to becoming a full-time coach. PTR offers Levels 1, 2, and 3, plus specialized programs like PTRW (for female coaches) and PTR ACE (for diverse applicants), both of which include scholarship opportunities.

All certified coaches must be SafePlay approved. The U.S. Center for SafeSport is an independent nonprofit committed to building a sport community where participants can work and learn together free of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse and misconduct. The USTA partners with the SafeSport Center and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee to maintain Safe Play policies, education, and reporting tools across tennis.
